So you've found a dog you would like to adopt! What are the next steps to bringing your new friend home to meet your family? And how long does the entire adoption process take?
Contact Us
Send us an email in the contact form below describing your interest in one or more of our dogs. We’ll respond within a few days to schedule a time to talk on the phone. A quick chat about what you are looking for in a new family member and more information about the dog(s) of interest to you will help us determine who might be a great fit for your family.
Home Visit and Moving In Day
Once your application has been approved, we’ll schedule a time for the home visit, including your prospective new family member of course. The home visit is an opportunity to briefly review the safety of your home and to discuss the routines of your family life, with respect to this particular dog. It also provides an opportunity to do a final evaluation of how the addition of our dog might work in your family and what to expect while the dog is going through this transition. If all of us — your family members, our representative, your animals and our dog — feel we’ve found a good match, we finalize the adoption with a contract and payment of the adoption fee of $395.00. Your new best friend may move in at that time. Every dog is fully vetted with age-appropriate care, and you will receive the complete medical records. (See Adoption Fees for more information.)
The Adjustment Phase
During the first two weeks with your new dog, we suggest that you provide a structured routine and lots of good boundaries. By learning what is appropriate and what to expect every day, your dog will begin to relax in your home as he/she transitions to being a member of your family. Once your dog has learned to trust you and is relaxed in his/her new home, you may want to schedule a meet and greet visit with your vet. However, it isn’t necessary to do this immediately as you dog will not require any medical attention. Giving him time to trust his new family and new life is most important in the early days with you.
Follow-Up
A volunteer will contact you to ask about the transition period for your family. There may be suggestions and/or resources for any challenges you have encountered, if any. We will be available for consultation as needed to ensure your dog settles into your family life successfully.
We hope you will send us photos of your new pal so we can share them with other Lizzy’s Lodge family and friends.
