Lizzy's Lodge is a small 501(c)(3) nonprofit foster-based dog rescue located just north of Washington, DC. We have been rescuing dogs in our region and in neighboring states for over 18 years. We have placed hundreds of rescue dogs over the years.
Unlike some of the large DC-based rescues, we don’t discriminate against dogs because of their breed or what they look like, and we focus on rescuing local and regional dogs from shelters that would otherwise be euthanized. We work with all breeds, ages, and sizes…any dog that needs help, especially those that no one else wants. We often work with frightened dogs, abused or traumatized dogs, or simply overlooked dogs that need extra time and patience to heal and develop the confidence to become a happy member of a new family.
All of our rescue dogs are either in foster care in Maryland within 30 minutes of Washington DC, or in boarding in a facility about one hour north of DC.
Lizzy came into my life and changed it forever. I already had my first Jack Russell terrier, Emma, who was a happy, engaging little girl. Lizzy, however, was a feisty and strong-willed Jack Russell that turned the household upside-down and brought unexpected challenges. Lizzy’s presence in the family also enriched my life in ways I didn’t recognize at the time. After losing both Emma and Lizzy, I knew that I wanted to help other dogs that needed loving homes and so briefly volunteered with a rescue that only accepted purebred Jack Russells, still my favorite breed. However, I couldn’t help wonderful dogs of other breeds. So, Lizzy’s Lodge Rescue was created to work with dogs of ALL breeds who need loving homes. I still miss both Emma and Lizzy but will always be grateful for the whirlwind named Lizzy that came into my life and helped me discover a purpose that continues to this day.
While Lizzy was my inspiration to become part of the rescue world, Lizzy’s Lodge was created by a group of committed people wanting to change the lives of dogs needing another chance. It doesn’t seem possible all these years later, but the need for people and organizations to help dogs was and still is overwhelming.
Millions of wonderful dogs are euthanized every year in shelters because no one wants them and shelters don’t have enough space for them. Rescue organizations like Lizzy’s Lodge do save a lot of dogs, but the number of animals in need engulfs us all. So, Lizzy’s Lodge continues to help as many dogs as we can, depending on our neighbors and community to assist by volunteering time and financial resources to make a difference for our dogs. We work every day to change their world. Will you join us?
