Lizzy's Lodge Rescue is a 501(c)3 nonprofit foster-based volunteer dog rescue located just north of Washington, D.C. We have been rescuing dogs in our region and in neighboring states since 2007.
Monetary donations, dog food, crates, beds, collars, harnesses, leashes, and other supplies support our mission of saving dogs and helping them find new lives. We are truly grateful.

The Everyday Care of our dogs involves activities and expenses often unnoticed but always essential to help our dogs stay healthy and happy for the time they are with us. An assortment of beds and bedding, including karanda style—some of which become more toy than bed–are always needed. Collars, leashes, and harnesses of various types and medium to large crates are useful training tools. Coats for winter, bath supplies, toys, vitamins and other supplements, and, of course, treats are also part of their stay at Lizzy’s Lodge.
Food Costs have become a challenge for rescues everywhere. In the past, almost 100% of the food we gave our dogs was donated by pet food companies. It was good quality food, and having that available to us meant we could focus our funds on other essential, often emergency, needs. In recent years, companies have changed their procedures, closed facilities, or even moved out of the area. So now we must pay for all of the food we provide our dogs. We still provide good quality food—that will never change—but it has affected how we manage our budget. Currently we are feeding 800 to 1000 pounds per month.
Medical Expenses are undoubtedly our largest budget item. These vary from routine vaccine updates, medicine for infections, gastrointestinal upsets, coughs and colds, limping and aching muscles and other routine matters. However the most budget busting moments come with cancer diagnoses or emergency surgeries, always unexpected and always requiring specialist vet care and assorted follow-up treatments. We never hesitate to provide the care needed in those moments, but it is challenging to meet the often enormous financial demands on our shoe string budget.
People often see a Lizzy’s dog that touches their heart. Any donation can be directed to a special dog, a special need, or simply due to a personal preference. We always honor every directed donation and will share the result of those special requests. Here are some options for making a special funding request.
- Do you have a favorite Lizzy’s Lodge pal? Sponsor a dog by making the donation in his/her name to help with those expenses.
- Our sanctuary dogs require routine medical care or, as in the case of Hailey, Beth, and Lucky, additional expenses to manage their ongoing illnesses. Direct a donation to one or all of these special pals.
- Emergencies that may require surgery, or injuries/sudden illnesses often develop quickly. Torn ACL’s, intestinal obstructions, and Dori’s recent spine surgery are examples of unexpected medical needs, some of which require immediate intervention. Specify your donation to be used for sudden, urgent medical expenses.
- Special needs dogs sometimes require specialized equipment or supplies to manage their condition, such as the cart for Dori. You can direct your donation to these special needs for our special pals.
- Want to help us manage our food costs? Direct your donation to our food expenses, order food via our Chewy wish list, or even host a Food for Lizzy’s Dogs party and invite guests to bring food or donations to support our dogs.
- In moments of crisis so we can save the life of a dog, we may have to arrange space in a reliable boarding facility. Of course we would prefer every dog to be in a foster home, but when we do not have space and we’re faced with letting a dog die or putting that dog in boarding, we’re always going to save the dog. Directing your donation to boarding expenses is truly helping to save a life.
As an all-volunteer 501(c)(3) nonprofit, our rescue efforts depend on the support of our community, with our funding provided exclusively from donations. So any contribution you can make to our work makes an enormous difference in not only the lives of the dogs in our care but also in our ability to save more dogs who need us.
Even though you may not meet our dogs, your support makes more of a difference than you likely realize. We see it in the happy faces of our dogs and their new families, in the wrestling and playing of our foster dogs, and in the eyes of a dog that is recovering and feeling safer every day. We see your part in those dogs, and we are more grateful than words can express.
We’re hoping that our new website will enable us to show you more clearly the difference you are making.
Thank you for caring!
