Meet Dori (Special Needs)
They planned on using Dori as bait for training fighting dogs. Luckily, she was rescued and a few days later came to Lizzy’s to recover. With time, good food, and lots of love, she healed and was looking forward to a new family and a new life…until, inexplicably, she suffered sudden cervical pain and hindlimb weakness. A trip to the emergency vet followed by a referral to a neurologist revealed a herniated disk, which required immediate decompressive spinal surgery. The surgery was successful, and after weeks of limited activity, she is now able to move around. However, she cannot use her back legs.
Now that her spine has healed, the focus has been on helping her back legs work again. We acquired a cart to encourage her to begin using her back legs, and she has done some rehabilitation work to help her reactivate the muscles and nerves that direct her movement. She is making an effort to stand using her back legs, but her success is measured in seconds, as expected. Her recovery will be a long process, but we hope she will regain some use of her back legs. For now, she loves the cart and can move around wherever she wishes with or without it. Nothing slows her down.
Despite her cruel treatment, Dori is very sweet and loving. She is incredibly smart, listens well, and is eager to learn. Even though she was starved, she isn’t food aggressive, but will go to great lengths to snag a treat. Not surprisingly, Dori is cautious with new people but she warms up quickly. She is very affectionate and really wants to please her person. Dori needs a family who has the time and space for her to have an active life. She’s ready for adventures and plenty of fun. She’s quite a girl!
