Sanctuary Dogs

Our promise to our rescue dogs

Lizzy’s Lodge takes dogs at risk in high-kill and overcrowded shelters, dogs abandoned at veterinary offices and boarding kennels, dogs neglected or abused in hoarding or cruelty situations, and beloved family pets whose families can no longer care for them. Sometimes we know the health status and behavior of a dog, but most often the information we get is minimal, if true.

What we do know is a dog needs us, and when we step up for that dog, we promise a lifetime of care if needed. We are honoring that promise for Lizzy’s Sanctuary dogs, who will have their forever home with us due to medical or behavior issues.

Our current resident dogs

Beth

Meet Beth, a North Carolina girl that arrived with heartworms and a low opinion of most people. After successful heartworm treatment, while we were working on her behavior around people, we sadly discovered that she has inoperable rectal cancer.  Since then she has had flare-ups and frequent vet visits, but she is holding her own. She is receiving medication and supportive care and more than 2 1/2 years later is active, playful, and content in her foster home. We’re keeping our promise to Beth to care for her throughout her illness for as long as she can stay. Beth Update >

Hailey

Hailey came to us at 6 months old with siblings Toby and Freckles. They had been caught roaming a farm and were then left in a horse stall without human contact. By the time they came to us, they were completely feral. All three are panicked around new people; however, Hailey is the most frightened. She is comfortable with her foster, but no one else. Recently we learned that she has a congenital heart condition, one that she cannot survive. With the heart medication, she is doing well. She is playful and content in the surroundings she knows, but one day her heart will give out. She’s only 3 years old now, but we will give her care and the best life possible until she leaves us.

Lucky

Here's Lucky, an 8-year-old darling boy who came from a local shelter in July with a severe case of pneumonia. He is adorable, loving, and playful, but he is still having breathing problems. Lucky has been under vet care since the day he arrived, and while his condition has improved, his breathing is still difficult for him. With medication and supportive care, we are hopeful his breathing issues will be resolved. If Lucky’s lungs heal, he will certainly be looking for a new family and a new life. However, until that time, Lucky will be a part of Lizzy’s family while we work to heal his ongoing illness. Lucky Update >

Sally

Sally, an 8-year-old puggle, came from a local shelter. Sally loves other dogs, but people—not so much. When she finds her person, as she did in the shelter, she is sweet and loving—but only with her person.  She loves playing with other dogs and, of course, car rides.  Sally will stay with us where she has lots of dog pals for playing, and someone she trusts for affection and lots of cuddles.

Gia

Gia, a 6-year-old Jindo, also came from a local shelter and was doing well with people until she became overprotective of her people.  Her protective behavior became aggression towards people she didn’t know.  As a result, she will be living with us in a home where she doesn’t feel a need to protect, a home in which she is happy and feels safe and loved.

Tucker

Handsome Tucker, a black and tan coonhound, came to us from a local shelter. At 6 years old, he likes people, including kids and dogs as well. However, he guards everything other than people, and what he guards changes. Food, treats, and toys are not an issue; only various objects, spaces, even rooms. Multiple potential adoptions failed due to this guarding behavior, even after professional training support.  However, in his foster home, he doesn’t guard anything.  He’s comfortable and content, as if he is saying, “This is where I want to be.”  So we’ll honor his preferences and give him the life that makes him happy.
